She stood at the edge of the old wooden bridge, heart a cavern of ache and searching. Kayla pulled her jacket tighter against the autumn chill, blinking up at the bruised sky, wondering — desperately — if God even saw her anymore. At twenty-nine, life had unraveled faster than she could stitch it back together: a broken engagement, a layoff from the job she loved, and now, waves of loneliness that left her gasping.

Most days, Kayla simply survived, going through motions that had long lost their meaning. Church was something she used to do with her parents when she was young, a warm memory buried under cynicism and heartbreak. How could salvation still be for someone like her — someone who had strayed so far, stumbled so often, doubted so much?

A leaf twirled down from the maples above, landing weightlessly on the river's surface. Kayla watched it float, something inside her cracking open with the finality of a quiet, desperate prayer: "God, if You're real... if You still want me... show me."

The reply wasn't thunder or vision. Instead, an elderly woman with a kind smile and a purple knitted hat approached the bridge, struggling with a heavy grocery bag. Kayla moved instinctively, reaching out to catch it before it tumbled from her frail arms.

"Thank you, dear," the woman beamed at her, eyes creasing with warmth. "Sometimes we can't carry things alone, can we?"

Kayla shook her head, an unexpected lump forming in her throat.

"May I tell you something?" the woman asked, leaning in slightly as if sharing a secret. "Jesus loves you. No matter where you've been. No matter how heavy your heart has become. He already carried it all — for you."

Tears burned hot against Kayla’s lashes. She hadn't said a word about her struggles, yet it felt as if this stranger had read the sorrow stamped across her soul.

"But... how do I know?" Kayla rasped, her voice barely a whisper.

The woman smiled, serene and sure. "You just have to believe. Romans 10:9 says if you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. It’s as simple and profound as that."

The woman pressed a small, worn card into Kayla’s hand — a card with John 3:16 printed across it in careful script — and gave her hand a gentle squeeze before disappearing into the golden mist of early evening.

For a long moment, Kayla just stood there. The card trembled in her fingers. Was it really that simple? Not about what she had done — or failed to do — but what Jesus had already done for her?

She sank to the bench by the river, the rough wood grounding her as she closed her eyes. She whispered it into the crisp air, into the quiet that now felt holy: "Jesus... I believe. I need You. Please save me."

A hush fell over the water, the woods, the very earth beneath her feet — as if the entire universe paused to bear witness. Peace unlike anything she had ever known seared through the cracks of her broken heart, filling it with light.

For the first time in a long time, Kayla was not alone. She was seen. She was held.

She was saved.

Later, walking home under a quilt of stars, she felt the card again in her pocket — a small, ordinary scrap of paper that had carried extraordinary hope. The night around her seemed to pulse with quiet music, and Kayla found herself smiling, sure in a way she had never been before.

She had encountered Love Himself on the bridge between lost and found.
